FAQ
About Working with Envision
What makes Envision Wealth Planning different from other financial advisors?
At Envision Wealth Planning, we combine evidence-based investment strategies with deeply personal financial planning. Our mission isn't just to help you grow your wealth-it's to help you align your money with your values, whether that means supporting your family, planning a meaningful retirement, or giving back to your community.
We serve women and families who want to be intentional with their financial decisions-clients who seek clarity, peace of mind, and a sense of purpose. As a fee-only, independent firm, we act as fiduciaries and always put your interests first. You'll receive customized guidance-not a sales pitch.
What truly sets us apart is our blend of technical expertise and human understanding. We bring empathy, education, and ethical clarity to each client relationship, helping you make confident financial decisions that support the life you want-now and in the future.
Who do you typically work with?
We work with individuals and families who are thoughtful about their money and their future. Many of our clients are women navigating midlife transitions-approaching retirement, experiencing widowhood or divorce, or managing family wealth with an eye toward legacy.
We also serve multigenerational families, nonprofit organizations, and charitable foundations. Some clients are still building their financial foundation, while others are focused on preserving and passing on wealth.
What they all have in common is a desire to live well today while planning wisely for tomorrow. They value honest advice, deep listening, and a collaborative relationship grounded in trust.
Do I need to have a certain amount of money to work with you?
We work with clients across a range of financial stages. Most of our investment management clients have $250,000 or more in investable assets, but we also offer financial planning services for those still building wealth.
If you're thoughtful about your finances and committed to intentional decision-making, we're happy to explore how we can work together. We believe good planning isn't just for the wealthy-it's for anyone who wants to live with purpose and financial confidence.
Are you a fiduciary? What does that mean for me?
Yes. Envision Wealth Planning operates as a fiduciary, which means we are legally and ethically required to act in your best interest-always.
As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER professional (CFP®), Sarah Schut has met rigorous standards in education, examination, experience, and ethics. The CFP® designation holds us to a fiduciary standard when delivering financial advice-so you receive guidance that's objective, transparent, and aligned solely with your goals.
How do you get paid?
We offer both investment management and financial planning services through a transparent, fee-only model.
What is your investment philosophy?
We build low-cost, globally diversified portfolios using mutual funds and ETFs from firms like Vanguard and Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA). These fund families are grounded in decades of academic research and emphasize broad exposure, long-term discipline, and low fees.
Our investment decisions are guided by your personal goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance-not by market fads or short-term noise. We aim to help you stay invested with confidence and peace of mind through all market cycles.
Do you pick individual stocks?
No. We don't believe in chasing short-term gains or market timing. Instead, we use diversified investment vehicles-like mutual funds and ETFs-to reduce risk, smooth volatility, and stay focused on long-term outcomes.
This approach helps eliminate the emotional rollercoaster of stock picking while supporting your goals in a consistent and cost-effective way.
Do you offer one-time financial plans or only ongoing services?
We specialize in ongoing financial planning, because life evolves-and so should your plan. Ongoing guidance helps you adapt to changes and stay on track.
That said, we do offer one-time financial plans for clients who prefer a standalone review. However, in our experience, real progress happens incrementally, and ongoing collaboration often leads to the most meaningful results.
About the Planning Process
What happens in the first meeting?
Please bring your financial statements for investment and retirement accounts-and, if you have one, a household budget or cash flow summary. We'll talk about your goals, review your current situation, and outline potential next steps.
How long does the planning process take?
Gone are the days of bulky, static financial plans. At Envision, we take a collaborative, ongoing approach. Depending on your service level, we work with you over time to align your investments and tackle areas like tax planning, estate organization, and cash flow strategies-so your full financial picture evolves with your life.
What should I prepare before our first meeting?
Reflect on your top financial goals and any concerns. These priorities shape our initial conversation and your planning direction. You're also encouraged to bring any questions-about our services, credentials, compensation, or philosophy.
Can you help if I'm going through a major life transition like divorce or widowhood?
Yes. Becoming suddenly solo is one of the most overwhelming life transitions. We're here to help you create clarity, confidence, and a values-based plan during a time that can feel uncertain and emotionally charged.
Do you help with household budgeting and cash flow?
Absolutely. A clear understanding of your income and spending is foundational to strong financial planning. We'll help you find a budgeting method that suits your style-whether that's a spreadsheet, app, or handwritten journal. The goal is financial awareness, not financial stress.
On Retirement & Legacy Planning
Can you help me plan how to spend in retirement without running out of money?
Yes. At Envision, we help clients navigate the complex decisions around retirement income. We use tools like spending guardrails, scenario analysis, and contingency planning to help you spend confidently-while reducing the risk of outliving your resources.
When should I start taking Social Security?
We provide comprehensive Social Security analysis for all retirement clients. While the numbers matter, so do personal factors. We'll walk you through your options, evaluate trade-offs, and align your claiming strategy with your broader retirement lifestyle and goals.
How do I plan to leave money to my children or charities?
Legacy planning is a meaningful part of what we do. We'll help you clarify your giving intentions and design a thoughtful, tax-efficient strategy to support your loved ones or charitable causes. When needed, we connect clients with estate planning attorneys and local foundations to ensure your wishes are carried out.
What if I want to align my investments with my values?
Sarah Schut holds the CSRIC® designation (Chartered SRI Counselor), a credential in sustainable and responsible investing. We offer investment strategies that align with your personal values through ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) screening and mission-aligned portfolio design.
On Nonprofit Services
Do you work with nonprofit organizations or foundation boards?
Yes. We work closely with nonprofit organizations and have deep experience serving on boards ourselves. Sarah Schut is especially passionate about advancing literacy and the arts. We believe that investing with purpose strengthens our communities.
Can you help our organization align investments with our mission?
Absolutely. We assist nonprofits in developing or refining an Investment Policy Statement (IPS), a cornerstone of responsible investment governance. We also help integrate ESG or mission-based guidelines into portfolio construction.
Logistics & Communication
Do you meet with clients in person or virtually?
Yes, we meet both in person and online-whatever suits your location and preferences best.
How often will we meet or check in?
At a minimum, we schedule an annual review meeting. Beyond that, we tailor meeting frequency to your needs and your selected service level. Many clients appreciate quarterly or semiannual check-ins, especially during life transitions or market changes.
Will I be able to view my accounts and plan online?
Yes. Our secure client portal, AdviceWorks, gives you 24/7 access to your investment accounts and financial plan, all in one place.
Can you work with my CPA or attorney?
Definitely. We regularly collaborate with clients' accountants, attorneys, and other professionals to ensure your full financial picture is aligned and well coordinated.
