Challenging Ourselves

Challenging Ourselves

May 28, 2025

I’m currently taking a writing class through The Writer’s Center, a wonderful institution based in Bethesda. Thanks to the internet, I can join a top-tier class from the comfort of my own home.

Last night during the break, I went downstairs. My husband and daughters were watching a movie and asked if I was really getting anything out of the class.

“Yes,” I told them, “I actually am.”

Truth be told, dragging myself back upstairs wasn’t easy. At 8:45 PM, I’m usually winding down—not cranking up my brain. But the instructor’s writing prompts force me to rethink familiar stories, to take the same narrative and approach it from a new angle. It’s work—creative, energizing, sometimes draining work. But it’s exactly the kind of challenge that keeps the mind agile.

Creativity matters. Whether it’s a flash of insight, an unexpected twist, or a thoughtful edit, creativity helps us solve problems, communicate better, and think differently. It’s the quiet engine behind progress—personal and professional.

I'm bringing that spirit into my work, too. I’ve just launched a client book club—open to anyone curious and engaged—because I believe community learning can spark the same kind of fresh thinking.

Our first pick is *King Dollar: The Currents of Currency* by Paul Blustein. With headlines swirling about the U.S. dollar’s value, this book offers a timely deep dive into why the dollar still holds such sway in the global economy—and what that means for all of us.
